Lump Checks and treatment - what to expect

When it comes to lumps and bumps, every case is different — so getting an accurate estimate starts with understanding what the lump is and where it’s located.

1. What is the lump?

To identify the type of cells within the lump, we usually start with a fine needle aspirate (FNA).
This involves taking a tiny sample of cells with a small needle — most pets tolerate it very well.

  • In-house cytology (examined by our vet): $45
  • External specialist pathologist cytology: $157

Sometimes a lump needs a larger sample (a biopsy) or specialist review to get a definitive diagnosis.

2. Where is the lump and has it spread?

Knowing the location helps us plan surgery if needed, but we also need to determine whether the lump could be cancerous and if it has spread anywhere else.

Depending on the type of cells found, we may recommend checking:

  • Nearby lymph nodes
  • The lungs
  • Other organs

These steps help us understand the full picture so we can offer the right treatment plan.

Your first step: Veterinary consultation

Your pet will need an initial consultation so the vet can assess the lump and recommend the appropriate tests.

  • Consultation: $105

At this visit, we can often perform the fine needle aspirate straight away.

What happens next?

  • If the lump is benign, surgery may not be necessary.
  • If the lump is malignant, growing, infected, or causing discomfort, surgical removal may be recommended.

Because every lump is different, surgical costs vary depending on size, location, and complexity.
Most lump removals fall within $1000–$2000

After your consultation and diagnostic testing, we’ll provide a personalised estimate and talk you through the safest and most effective treatment plan for your pet.
